The latest AICPA–CPA Canada publication advances the discussion by turning to assurance. It highlights the increasing expectation for independent evaluation of systems that influence business outcomes. This shift does not replace the profession’s mandate; it amplifies it.

This article focuses on the practical implications: how professional accountants should prepare to deliver assurance in an environment where technology shapes the information being evaluated.

AI Assurance Begins With Understanding the New Subject Matter

The publication underscores that assurance will expand beyond validating numbers or outputs. It will extend to the system behaviours, control environments, and governance structures that drive those outputs. The first step in preparing for AI assurance, therefore, is redefining what is being assured.

The shift begins with understanding data pathways. Assurance must increasingly assess how information was generated, not merely whether it is accurate at a point in time. This requires visibility into system behaviour, the flow of data through models and tools, and the level of explainability available to support defensible conclusions.

A second shift concerns automation behaviour. Automated processes may technically comply with rules yet produce outcomes that require critical evaluation. Professional accountants will need to assess how AI behaves with new data, how exceptions and overrides are controlled, and whether the system operates consistently.

A third shift relates to the formation of evidence. AI-influenced information is not evidence by itself. Assurance must document the origin of that information, the conditions in which it was produced, and whether it aligns with suitable criteria. This is foundational to building trust in AI-enabled processes.

Capabilities Professional Accountants Must Build for AI Assurance

Preparation for AI assurance involves strengthening capability in several areas that extend beyond traditional audit and assurance techniques.

Systems literacy is essential. Professional accountants do not need to design models, but they must understand how AI functions within a workflow, what variables influence outputs, and where risks arise as automation substitutes or supplements human judgment.

Evidence evaluation must evolve. AI models may change their behaviour as data shifts. Assurance techniques must therefore assess ongoing performance, identify drift or instability, and document how variability was considered.

Criteria selection becomes more complex. Assurance depends on evaluating subject matter against clear, suitable criteria. Professional accountants must be able to identify or develop criteria that are complete, relevant, and capable of supporting consistent evaluation across engagements.

Collaboration with specialists will become a standard feature of AI assurance. Multidisciplinary teams will be required to assess technical components while ensuring that the assurance conclusion remains grounded in professional judgment and governance expectations.

What AI Assurance Engagements Will Require in Practice

The publication recognises that not every organisation will immediately qualify for assurance. Many will require readiness assessments, governance reviews, mapping of AI-enabled workflows, and evaluation of control maturity.

Professional accountants must be prepared to conduct engagement planning differently. AI assurance cannot rely on conventional checklists. Planning must consider the nature of the system, its potential impacts, the transparency it provides, and the criteria applied.

Documentation expectations will also evolve. AI leaves an influence trail, and engagements will need to describe where AI influenced the process, how that influence was evaluated, and how it informed the practitioner’s conclusion. Clarity on system involvement is now part of maintaining trust.

The AICPA–CPA Canada publication makes one point clear: assurance over AI systems will demand new forms of evidence, clearer criteria, and a deeper understanding of how technology shapes financial information. Professional accountants must now extend their established strengths — judgment, documentation discipline, control evaluation, and skepticism — into environments where system behaviour influences outcomes just as much as human decisions.

Assurance has always existed to sustain trust. AI does not reduce that responsibility; it increases it. While automation may streamline processes, it introduces new risks and dependencies that require stronger oversight, not lighter scrutiny. The profession’s role will be defined not only by how well standards are applied, but by how effectively professionals can assess and explain the reliability of the systems that apply them.

The method may evolve, but the expectation does not: assurance must continue to provide confidence in the information stakeholders rely on. In an AI-enabled ecosystem, that means mastering the systems shaping the evidence — because trust in the numbers now depends on trust in the technology behind them.
